I am mom enough..

A couple of the women I know from the Philly Social Media Moms started this “I am Mom Enough” link party. I wanted to add my two cents, but the last 24 hours in this house have been complete chaos, so better late than never! You can check out the other people who contributed and you can even contribute yourself to the link party why you are Mom Enough…

You can see the post HERE at confessions of a Modern Day Donna Reed. I love her blog:) Also check out Kelly at The Turnip Farmer who also has shared on this subject.

In the past I have trusted what doctors, friends, random people have said, until my son had a health scare and I had the courage to ask questions and trust my gut. It turned out my gut was right and the doctor was wrong. I blamed myself for not standing up as his mother. Now I make decisions on what I feel is best and not necessarily what works for others. Being a mom is the greatest responsibility and sometimes you need to stand up for yourself and your child. You need to question why.

Today I salute the stay at home moms, the work at home moms, the working moms and all moms around the world. We are all in this together. Let’s stop judging and be supportive:) Happy Mothers Day!

Easton Cupcakes and Little Mans first Movie

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
Today was just one of those days. I had a photo shoot scheduled for an awesome momma to be, however, the threat of rain caused us to reschedule. There we were, nothing to do and not wanting to be stuck in the house all day, we called the home care service to hang out with gram for a couple of hours and decided to use our Regal Cinemas gift card we got for Easter.

We never get to the movies, but I thought it would be fun to take little man to his first movie at the movie theater I spent my high school and college years working at. We decided on The Lorax as it was animated and little man loves his Dr Seuss books. He got a little antsy, however, he held in until the end (bribery with popcorn helped:) I really loved the Lorax and the message of the movie.

After the movie, we headed to downtown Easton to find the new cupcake shop a friend of mine told me about. Sweet Girlz bakery is on North Third Street and is super cute. In addition to cupcakes they had cake pops, cookies, and even my favorite – kiffles! I walked out with a few cupcakes – a chocolate peanut butter, red velvet, and chocolate cupcakes. I tested a little bit of each one and they were all delicious! The cake was moist and the icing was sweet but not sickening sweet. The chocolate reminded me so much of my moms awesome chocolate cake, I almost asked to peek in the back to see if she was in there:) Two thumbs up from me, little man and gram!

I saw signs up for their Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, so if you are in the area, you may want to check it out and support a new local business!

P.S. Extra special shout out to Griswolds Special Care who helps us with gram when we want to have a daddy, mommy, and little man day. Every person that has ever come to the house has been truly amazing. They are the most reasonably priced service in the area and the people they have working for them are truly special.

Gone Fishing

Last weekend the fishing season opened here in the Lehigh Valley. We decided that little man is at a great age where he can go fishing. He can sit still for more than 2 seconds, he won’t try to get in the water if we tell him not to, and he can hold his own rod without throwing it in the stream:) We took him to Sand Island and quickly realized that he was in little man heaven

He is obsessed with trains and this one goes almost directly overhead…

And some planes fly low heading to the airport…

He loves to run and there is a running trail behind so he can burn off some energy…

He gets to watch the duckies float down stream…

He gets to sit and relax with his fishing pole

And most importantly he gets to spend time with his favorite person in the whole world

Can’t get any better than that! Well maybe if we actually caught a fish:) We did however, manage to hook a leaf….

My days of Changing Diapers are over…

I think I have expressed here on more than one occasion  that I may not survive potty training little man. It feels like I have been trying for years. Little Man is strong willed, independent, and determined. These are great qualities in an adult and I’m sure he will be successful in his future, but a toddler who is learning to potty train? Not so much. Especially when he uses those powers for evil. He was determined not to go in the potty and I have spent almost a year convincing him that going on the potty is the thing to do.

I was starting to panic as he was in the largest size diaper that was made… Where do you go from there – Depends? My mind would race. What if he didn’t go on the potty by fall? He couldn’t go to preschool? Noooo!!!!!!…. it’s my light at the end of the tunnel (OK, that sounds a bit dramatic) but as any momma who stays at home or works from home know those couple hours a week they are in preschool makes the difference between the leaning tower of laundry and a clean house:)

We watched the DVDs, we did the “Potty Dance” a million times so many, in fact I still hear the song in my head replaying over and over. Oh I wish it would stop. We read the books and read them again and read them….. Well, you get the idea. I have tried bribery, I have tried praise, Cold Turkey, Cheerios in the Potty (as a suggestion from my Mother in Law – not so great if your kid is obsessed with Cheerios and tries to fish them out), “Naked Time” (which ended badly by the way), I have tried EVERYTHING.

What I didn’t try was just letting it happen naturally which is what went down. He was ready and he went. He was so excited that he did it and so proud, he went in the potty again….. and again… and again. It’s been about 5 days of consistant going even when we aren’t at home. I don’t have to ask anymore, he just tells me.

I have the best little man….. I should have realized this by now, but like everything else he has done, he just has to do it on his own time. We all remember Binnkiegeddan, the fact he didn’t sleep through the night for 2 years 2 months and 3 days, or my neurotic pleas for him to start clapping (which he didn’t do until he was over a year). So from this potty training experience, I have learned I need to RELAX… He will get to it when he’s ready. Any sooner and I just drive myself crazy.

Were your kids easy or hard to potty train? Are any of you going through this now?

Setting Your 2012 Goals

I really dislike using the term “New Years Resolutions”. Like most of us, I make a list of resolutions half heartedly year after year and then get sidetracked a month or so after new years. I end up feeling defeated and bad about myself. In reality, I was setting myself up for failure from the beginning. I had no plan, no way to measure how I was doing in reaching the resolution and set no end date in order to reach them.

So I decided that this year they would be “goals” and I headed way back to my business school days when I learned about SMART goals.

S.M.A.R.T goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable (or Achievable), Relavent and Timely. When setting your personal and professional goals, following this acronym will help you achieve those goals.

How do you set a SMART goal. Make sure that you pick something that can be measured and achieved in a reasonable amount of time… Here are some examples:

Bad Goal:  I want to lose 50 pounds or I want to get healthy

SMART Goal:  “I will lose 10 pounds in two months”   or “I want to work out 3 times a week for 8 weeks and lose 10 pounds.”

Once you reach those goals you can always readjust or make a new goal. losing 50 pounds is a big feat. if you break them into small 10 lb increments, they seem much more manageable. If you give it a due date, you are now making yourself accountable for achieving that goal.

From what I have been reading from various sources and people who have had major success in achieving their goals in life from losing weight to starting their own businesses, the below points seem to be the common ground for their stories:

  • Start small and work your way into things
  • Tell other people what your goals are. Don’t keep them to yourself. If you let other people hold you accountable and share your goals with them, you may have more success.
  • Write your goals down and place them in a spot that you see every day
  • Make a vision board of what you want to accomplish

I created the above Goals Planner to print out and use when writing down your goals. You can write down your goals and frame this or affix to your fridge so that you are constantly reminded of your goals! Just go HERE. Once the screen pops up with the full sized version, you can right click and hit print (you may have to adjust your printing preferences to print to letter size) or if you have Photoshop or another editing software, you can type your goals instead of writing them.

I’ll be sharing my 2012 goals on a post to follow and I’m hoping that you all help me be accountable for reaching them!

The Thankful Child

I have been reading articles from various bloggers and parenting sites about teaching your children gratitude and thankfullness especially around the holidays. It’s so easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle and really forget what the holidays are about. Spending time with family, helping those less fortunate and being thankful of what you have.

It’s hard as a parent to walk that line. The line that wants to give your kids what you didn’t have growing up and the one who doesn’t want to give your kids too much. Now that little man is getting bigger and starting to understand the excitement of Christmas, I want to make sure that he understands what the holidays are all about and is thankful for what he has. Instead of focusing on what he “gets”.

The articles I have been reading have ranged from the “one gift rule” to the handmade gift challenge. It seems that there are a ton of suggestions. So what is the right way? Whats the magic number of presents that’s just enough but not too many?

I would love to hear your thoughts on this and what you do in your families to teach thanks and appreciation to your children during the holidays.

Potty Training, Little Man, and Me…. Life at our house right now

So after a few weeks of Potty Training and trying virtually everything I found in books, videos, parenting magazines and any random person who could offer any type of advice whatsoever, I hit a stand still. Desperate,  I consulted my Magic 8-ball app today & was a bit discouraged with the conversation… It went a little something like this:

Me: Will I survive Potty Training Little Man?

Magic 8-ball: Outlook Not So Good

Nice.

Some Great Apps For Busy Moms (and Dads too:)

Img Source: How Stuff Works

It took me a really long time to jump on the smart phone boat and when I did it was amusing to say the least. It took me a few days to figure out how to answer the phone and about a week to realize all those muted calls were from my face touching the screen… Needless to say, I won’t be replacing Steve Jobs at Apple:) Once I finally got the hang of it, I was hooked. How did I ever survive without one? One little phone replaced an MP3 player, Ebook reader, Palm Pilot, Computer (for random internet searches), GPS and so much more.

So in order to bring you the best of the best apps, I consulted with some of the women from Philly Social Media Moms to see what their favorite apps were and why.
Kelly from http://www.raudenbushfamily.blogspot.com/ has an Iphone. Her two favorite apps are:
Pic2Shop (available both Android and Iphone) - “You can scan items when you are shopping to compare prices. Love it!”
Mapquest (available both Android and Iphone)- “A great app, so much better than the apple map app. Even speaks to you — goodbye big ole GPS!”
Tomika from http://www.mymommysneighborhood.com/ has an Android phone and her favorite app is Zoodle (available both Android and Iphone). Tomika says, “This app allows the kids to play games, read and watch movies which is sometimes needed to keep them occupied. As a busy real estate consultant, I meet with a lot of moms with small kids who want immediate attention. This app allows moms and dads to view homes or paperwork while the kids are sitting quietly. My princess discovered this app and we love it!”
Kristie from http://www.divadietitian.com/ has an Iphone and loves the Fooducate App (available both Android and Iphone). The app allows you to scan the barcode of the item, see what’s really inside, and selects healthier alternatives. Kristie says,  “It helps me save time label reading while grocery shopping!”

My personal favorite busy mom app is Cozi (available both Iphone and Android)! Cozi is a family calendar where you can register all the members of your family, their emails and cell phones. When you enter in a calendar item, you can specify which member of the family it’s for and even set up text or email alerts to go to them when they have an event. Cozi also has space for journaling – which is great as a mom to a little one! I can just type up something silly that Little Man said or maybe something he did. You can also create lists, grocery lists, to do lists and text those lists to yourself or a family member. Hubs will never forget something at the grocery store again:) I even use it as a notepad, jotting down blogging ideas. I not only use Cozi for a calendar of family events, I use it for blogging events and as an editorial calendar! All my information is right there. Plus it’s an online calendar so I can access from my computer or anyones computer. If my phone is ever lost or damaged, my information is still there.
I also love The Photoshop Express app for both Android and Iphone. You can edit, crop, and perfect your camera photos right after you take them and upload them to photoshop.com where you can keep an online gallery. It’s so quick and easy. You can even save them to your phone after edited for easy posting on Twitter or Facebook.

By the way, my favorite fun apps are:

Dunkin Donut Finder (for obvious reasons)

The Virtual Lighter – OK so I’m a child of the 80′s…This would have saved me many singed thumbnails in my day.
Air Horn – just in case someone messes with me or I want to aggravate someone:)
Google Sky Map – You point your phone at the sky and it tells you what you are looking at. This is great to teach the kiddos with!
These apps can be found by searching on your smart phone’s app marketplace… So do you have an app you can’t live without that we missed? Drop me an email at jen (at) lehighvalleymomma (dot) com or leave me a comment below!
