Adventures in Organic Gardening – The Plan

Every year, I try to plan ahead what I would like to grow. Last year because of all the health problems I was experiencing, I didn’t have a chance to plant a large garden. In fact we had a few tomatoes and basil that made it. Because of the extreme amounts of rain, it stripped the nutrients out of the soil of the tomatoes and I didn’t replace them fast enough, so I only yielded a dozen or two tomatoes. Because basil is a little more tough (and harder to kill) I had a surplus of basil that I froze. My dreams of caprese salad fresh from the garden didn’t happen. You can read my plan for last year HERE and last years update HERE

My mom is the green thumb of the family. I can kill any plant that I touch, however, I have had luck in the past with tomatoes and herbs. This year I am determined to have enough tomatoes that I can preserve them and make homemade sauce for the winter. I also would like to plant some eggplant and squash.  This year I am a little more realistic than my goals last year.

My Plan

Eggplants

Squash

Basil

Oregano

Tomatoes

Lettuce

Because of the poor quality of our soil, I will have to do raised beds or pots. In the past I have used large pots for the tomatoes and herbs. This year I am going to try another method for some of the plants. I will buy organic soil bags and plant directly into them. The only thing is I will probably have to cover as the bunnies may find this a little too enticing!

I have wanted to go to Rodale and take their Organic Gardening class for a few years now, however, it never ends up being a time that is available. If you are looking for resources for organic gardening, there are a few below:

Organic Gardening Magazine

Published by Rodale and has lots of information. There is a free printable section where you can download items like Seed Starting Charts, Info about good bugs and bad bugs, landscaping and more. They have a forum you can join to interact with others and ask questions.

Sustainable Gardening Tips

Another great resource with printables and articles on organic gardening

Don’t have time for a big garden? Pick one or two items that you buy all the time at the store and are usually expensive when you do… Mine is fresh basil and tomatoes. Tomatoes are usually pricey, but are (most of the time) easy to grow and each plant can yeild a ton of them. Same idea with basil. I can plant a huge tub of basil for less than $2 but the fresh basil plants at the store can be anywhere from $1.99-$2.99

So who has already planted their garden? What are you harvesting this year?

Don’t worry, if you aren’t a green thumb, I am putting together a resource of all the farmers markets in the Lehigh Valley so you can buy from the pro’s:)

Attack of the Pink Slime – and why I won’t be buying processed beef any time soon

As a consumer, most people trust that the powers that be will be watching over you and making sure that the foods you eat are properly cared for and have been inspected, etc. I have had little faith in this system after watching documentaries like Food, Inc and Super Size Me. I have even less faith after watching “The Doctors”  last week. They brought to light the issues with the way that meats are raised and handled.

Would you eat something called Pink Slime? I wouldn’t. The problem is when you buy processed beef from the grocery store you have no idea whether or not you are getting pink slime mixed in your beef. According to Jamie Oliver, 70% of our beef has pink slime. What is Pink Slime exactly? It’s a mixture of the parts of the beef that can’t be used and ammonia. They spin the beef bits in a centrifuge and it gets rinsed with ammonia to kill the ecoli and bacteria. There is an “acceptable” amount of pink slime that is allowed in packaged meat and they don’t even have to disclose it. The worst part is it’s in the meats served in the school system.

If you ever want an eye opening view of where your food comes from, watch Food Inc. If you want to see a visual on Pink Slime, check out this video from Jamie Olivers Food Revolution which explains the process:

I guess the moral of the story is to know where your food comes. There is no better way to do that than to buy from local farmers or buy certified organic where there are strict standards as to what the animal eats, how it’s treated, and how the foods are processed. Here in the Lehigh Valley, we have a lot of independent and organic farms who use high standards on the way the animals are raised. If you want to find a local farm where you can purchase your meats, head to Buy Local Greater Lehigh Valley where you can search for farmers who sell to the public.
