Ways to Make Extra Money: Mystery Shopping

This is one of the ways to make money that I see the most scams. I researched carefully when I was looking to mystery shop. I thought it would be a great opportunity to get out of the house and make extra cash while doing it. I found two companies that I like to work with. They are:

Beyond Hello (the url when you sign up is sassie shops)

Trend source

NEVER PAY FOR MYSTERY SHOPPING! You may have to buy something small which you can return later or get reimbursed for but you should never pay to get leads for mystery shopping.

Money Saving Mom published an article HERE from one of her readers experience with mystery shops. It lists a couple more companies, so you may want to check them out.

I have done a few for both companies and haven’t had any issues. Their shops vary. Some will require you to call a company, some will have you buy something small, some will reimburse you for that plus your pay, some will allow you to return the purchase. In December, I did 4 shops for about $45 total. Two of which were on the phone, so it just required me to call and ask information, so in total, I spent less than an hour. I made sure two of the shops were in the same area, so I did them back to back.

My Thoughts About Mystery Shopping

This isn’t a way to make a living, but is great for extra cash if you qualify for surveys. Make sure that you check your email frequently because the jobs can fill up quick. Also, make sure that you are very careful reading the requirements. You could risk not being paid if you don’t do it correctly. Make sure you take time to write truthful and thoughtful responses. Always use complete sentences. I have gotten more jobs because I have a great rating. All in all, if you find a reputable company mystery shopping can be fun:)

Ways To Make Extra Money: Completing Tasks

Every Tuesday, I am featuring ways to make a few extra bucks while at home. These won’t get your rich or substitute employment, but you may make a couple extra dollars. Remember, I do my best to check out all of these leads, however, the responsibility lies with you to use due diligence when researching and deciding if they are the right fit for you.

Some companies like Amazon will pay people to complete manual tasks that can’t be done by computers. I have done some for Amazon and they are usually quick tasks. They don’t pay much, however, they usually don’t take long to complete. I would normally do them while sitting around when I wasn’t doing anything else.

Completing Tasks

Microworkers Share through social networks and your blog and get paid. Complete Tasks

Amazon Mechanical Turk – Complete tasks for money that can’t be done by computers. Some are only a few cents per action, but they don’t take long. The good thing is that they pay immediately and credit to your Amazon Account.

Inbox Dollarsyou can complete tasks like web searching or answering questions through their Task area. Most are only a few cents each to complete.

Ways To Make Money – Answering Questions

In response to the mommas who have asked me for ways to make extra money from home, I am now featuring a different way every Tuesday. This week, we are looking at companies that pay people to answer questions from their customers. Remember these aren’t going to pay you full time salaries, but if you are looking for a little spending money, they are worth learning about.

There are a couple survey companies that deal with answering questions for cash.

I don’t have a lot of experience with these. I just signed up with Cha Cha. Once I have completed the training and start with them, I plan on doing a full review. The below companies I heard about from Work At Home Adventures, a great resource for work at home moms! You can see all of her reviews on the below companies HERE

Webanswers

Cha Cha

Live Person

63336

KGB

Weegy

Mahalo

As always, use due diligence when researching and signing up for these companies. These are just a list of resources for you. I do my best to screen each, however, the responsibility lies with you to check them out for yourself.

Ways to Make Money: Getting Started with Surveys

A lot of my readers ask me about the extra ways that I have made spending money while being home with little man. I decided to start sharing. Every Tuesday, I will be posting about different ways to make a few extra dollars. This isn’t the get rich quick way. But consistantly, the last few years have been debt free Christmas’ because of giftcards and paypal that I have earned through surveys and focus groups. You can view my tips for a Debt-Free Xmas HERE. I usually complete the surveys at night while watching TV or when little man is napping.

The Basics

Surveys are a great way to earn a little extra money or gift cards. I also tested out 11 products before they hit the shelves. I even took part in a consumer panel for a week in which I got paid $100 (in Visa gift card) for entering in our snacking habits into a palm pilot for the week.

The key is to find reputable survey companies. I have compiled a list for you of survey companies I have worked with personally and some recommended to me by friends that have used the company. Here are some things to remember when signing up to take surveys.

1. Make sure the company is reputable and pays for your work. You can check to see if they have any claims at the Better Business Bureau.

2. You may want to set up a separate email so that the requests filter to that and not clutter your main email.

3. When you join the survey company, make sure that you fill out all of the profile information and any profile questionnaires that they send you. These will help them profile you for future surveys. These surveys are usually tedious and not all of them result in points or money, but they will lead to future opportunities.

4. Never enter secure information like social security numbers, account numbers, passwords when you take a survey. I would also never give my employers name as well. I have never been asked any of those questions by survey companies. You may be asked age, race, religion, household income, birthday, etc. Those are all questions I have seen before and are used to profile consumers.

How do these survey companies work? How can they afford to pay me money?

Most survey companies have contracts with larger companies to do market research on their behalf. They are trying to get information about consumer purchasing and demographics so that they can create new products or services or get information on who to market the product to. Since they are being paid to collect this information, they in turn can afford to pay the consumer. Sometimes they will pay in “points” which can in turn be cashed in for gift cards, paypal payments, checks, or amazon codes. Each survey company pays in a different way.

You won’t get rich from filling out surveys, but if you consistantly fill them out, you can earn extra cash. Are there any drawbacks? Yes. Sometimes you will only get a small amount for filling out the survey. Sometimes they are extremely time consuming. If you don’t fit a certain demographic, your survey invitations may be infrequent. Also, some companies have a high threshold to cash out, like $20 or $30. If you don’t recieve a lot of invitations, it may take a long time to get that reward.

I wanted to share with you the survey companies that I have had personal experience with. I put them in order of my favorite. Remember each company will work differently for you. Demographics will dictate how many surveys you recieve and each family is different. Just remember to fill out any profile surveys and information. The more they know, the more you may qualify for.

Survey Companies I have worked with:

Opinion Outpost - This has been my all-time favorite. I recieve the most surveys and they pay the most for the surveys I do. They also have a low cash out point. It used to be $5 for a check or Amazon Gift Card. They did up the check amount to $20 this year, however, the Amazon Gift Cards are still at $5. They operate on a points system and those points can be cashed out for a check, amazon gift cards (instant) or a donation to the American Red Cross. I always consider the Amazon cards like cash because I order everything from groceries to toilet paper from Amazon. They also give you $1 for each friend you refer to the site. I have never had a problem with them in any way.

Lightspeed (now called My Survey) – They switched to a different name and now my login doesn’t work anymore and they aren’t taking new applicants right now, so I’m just waiting until they accept new to re-sign up. Lightspeed worked on a points system as well. I have not only taken surveys, but I have qualified for surveys at the end that ended up sending products home for me to try and complete additional survey for additional points. I’m not sure if things have changed with the name change, but I was happy with them in the past.

Toluna - Works the same as the other survey companies – complete surveys for points which can be redeemed for check, paypal, or gift cards. They had converted the amount of points a while ago and it seems to take a lot longer to get your reward, but there are always surveys for me to take.

Valued Opinions - This works like most other survey companies. I recieved a $20 Visa Gift Card when I got to the payment threshold. It looks like now you can only redeem for Amazon, Macy’s and a couple other gift cards. I don’t recieve a lot of survey requests, but the ones I did get were worth it. If you want to become a member through a referral from me – email me with your email address to jen (at) mymommyworksonline (dot) com

SynovateI just joined this so I can’t speak yet as to how great this company is.

Hybrid – Surveys and Offers

My Points – You get points for surveys, clicking through and reading emails, if you shop online through there site, and completing offers (free and pay). They pay in gift cards (most brand names – like Target, Pottery Barn, etc.) or paypal.

Reward Port - You get points for surveys, clicking through and reading emails, if you shop online through there site, and completing offers (free and pay). They pay in gift cards (most brand names – like Target, Pottery Barn, etc.)

Inbox Dollars - You get points for surveys, clicking through and reading emails, if you shop online through there site, and completing offers (free and pay). They pay in gift cards (most brand names – like Target, Pottery Barn, etc.) You get a $5 bonus for signing up!

** Note about these companies – They also have offers that are trial offers, so be very careful. If you aren’t a person that’s diligent about sending things back or staying on top of calling a company to cancel, pass it up. You will end up losing money if you agree to a trial with a credit card and not send it back in time***

Other Survey Companies that are out there – I don’t have experience with them so I can only speak generally on them

Ipos- I say

Minefield

Neilsen Home Scan Panel – Have you ever seen shoppers in the grocery store that don’t work there but carry a scanner anyways? This program you scan what you shop for and then you earn points which translates into prizes. I have heard mixed ratings on this program, plus I don’t do a ton of shopping in grocery stores, so it’s a waste of time for me.

For My Philly Readers and LV readers, too! – Job Prosper Flexible and Work from Home Job Fair

This Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 11-4, JobProsper is hosting a Flexible & Work from Home Expo at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. At the job Fair, companies like Whole Foods, Verizon, New Customer Service Corp, Securitas Securities, Any Art, Adecco Staffing, Prosperiti Public Relations and more will be looking for candidates for flexible and possible work at home positions.

Job Prosper was started by stay at home moms (like me) who wanted to make sure other stay at home moms could contribute to their households without sacrificing the quality of their family lives. They also screen all of the companies participating so you can be sure that there are no scams.

In addition to the jobfair, there will be a Panel Discussion: Decision Makers Talk about Getting Flexible Employment that will be going on at 2 p.m. during the fair.

This is really great concept considering it’s really tough sometimes finding work at home opportunities out there without being scammed. I do contracts and freelancing assignments from time to time but it was very time consuming finding these LEGITIMATE companies to work with. This Job Expo is a great idea bringing these companies to you.

Making Money Monday – Sell Your Stuff!!!

Most people have extra things in storage or laying around that you don’t need. I know we did! After the flood, we had a huge yard sale and ended up making a few hundred dollars which helped us with the cleanup efforts.

Here are a few sites where you can sell unwanted stuff:

Online

Ebay – You can list your items on Ebay as an auction. You can start the bidding at an amount that you set and if you want to have a “reserve” (price that you need to meet) you can set that as well. Most of the time, the buyer will pay via paypal (I reccommend only making your auction paypal)

Craigslist – This is a free listing. You can list items and then decide how you will collect the money or get the item to your buyer.

Etsy – have vintage items or handmade items? You can sell them on Etsy. You pay a very small listing fee (like pennies) for four months and when you sell the item, Etsy will take a small percentage of the sale.

Amazon – You can apply for an Amazon seller account and sell used books, DVD’s and other things through Amazon. If you sell less than 40 items per month, you pay $.99 and a percentage of the sale.

Cash 4 Books – Check your ISBN #’s to see if they are buying your book at that time. If they are, you can print out a shipping label and send in the books. Once the books are recieved and processed you receive payment.

BookScouter - You can check with them first when selling books to see who is paying highest for them and you can sell your books to the highest paying online retailer

Half.com

TextbookX – sell old college textbooks here. I made a few dollars here back in the day

In Person

Consignment or Resale Shops – Take your used kids clothes, games, toys, or other items and earn extra cash. Scout out stores in great locations or are always busy! The more customers, the better the chance of getting rid of your items.

Free Papers – Some of the papers in the area like “The Key” or Focus offer free or cheap advertising of items in their weekly papers.

Jewelry Store/Brokers – Have broken pieces of jewelry or mismatched items – right now you can sell your gold and silver as it’s in an all time high. Don’t be afraid to go to a few places and get a quote. Prices can vary from jeweler to jeweler.

Have a yard sale or participate in a indoor flea market!

Hope this list helps you get started on making some extra money for the holidays:) Have any to add to the list, leave it in the comments

Make Money Monday – Surveys

I was introduced to surveys a few years back when I started this whole journey of saving money. I jumped right in and signed up for as many company’s as I could and over the past few years have whittled my way down to a select few that seem to have the best opportunities for me. I thought I would share them with you. I take these surveys at night when we are sitting and watching TV and last year these surveys paid for our Christmas gifts with the gift cards and cash I earned.

Things to remember:

1. You are not going to make a large income on surveys. Will you make extra money and gift cards yes!

2. Take all of the screener and profile surveys they offer. This will qualify you for more opportunities because most companies look for a certain demographic.

3. Stick with it. Some surveys have a high cashout but if you keep up with taking them, eventually you will get there and the reward will be sweet.

My favorite companies:

Opinion Outpost  ** my personal favorite – They pay in Amazon gift cards or check and the cashout is only $5 for Amazon gift cards ($20 for cash). They also pay better than the other ones and personally I qualify for the most surveys…

Toluna

Valued Opinions

My Points – ** they send you paid emails to read and also the occasional survey – you can also get points
for printing out coupons.com coupons through there site. They pay in points which you can cash in for a variety of name brand gift cards

Synovate - They only accept applicants at certain times. I just started with them and almost ready to cash out. So I have no complaints.

These are just a few of the survey companies that I have had success with. Everyones experience may vary and depending on how many people in your household, ages, children, etc. will determine which opportunities you may receive.

Leave me a comment if you have a favorite survey company that you use!
